"Nitrous

Think you’re the only grown-up who’s anxious about an upcoming dental appointment? A study published in the September 2025 issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association found that roughly 73 percent of American adults are scared of going to the dentist, with nearly 27 percent categorizing their anxiety as severe. It’s completely normal, to the point that many dental practices offer nitrous oxide treatment to help calm their patients’ nerves. If you’re looking for something to help you face your fears and get the dental care you need, continue reading to learn all about this option!

How Nitrous Oxide Works

Nitrous oxide is a gas inhaled through a nasal mask that produces feelings of calmness and serenity in anxious dental patients. You may have an overall physical sensation of numbness and slight tingling, or outright euphoria where you feel like you don’t have a care in the world! Because patients often get a case of the giggles when nitrous oxide is applied, it’s earned the nickname “laughing gas.”

Nitrous Oxide is Nothing New

If you’re a bit dubious about undergoing nitrous oxide administration, just know that it’s been used by medical professionals for well over 200 years, dating all the way back to 1793! An English scientist by the name of Joseph Priestly discovered it, and centuries later, it’s still one of the most commonly used anesthetics.

Best for Mild to Moderate Anxiety

Unlike some deeper forms of sedation, nitrous oxide generally allows you to remain awake and responsive throughout your appointment. You’ll typically be able to hear your dentist, follow instructions, and communicate if you feel uncomfortable.

Although you may feel relaxed or slightly detached from your surroundings, nitrous oxide doesn’t usually cause you to lose consciousness. This makes it a useful option for patients who want help managing anxiety without undergoing general anesthesia.

It’s important to remember that nitrous oxide helps with relaxation, but it doesn’t necessarily eliminate pain. Your dentist may still use local anesthesia to numb the treatment area when needed.

Nitrous Oxide Won’t Derail Your Entire Day

One major advantage of nitrous oxide is how quickly its effects usually disappear. Once your procedure is finished, your dentist will typically provide pure oxygen for several minutes to help clear the remaining gas from your system.

Most patients feel back to normal shortly afterward and can return to work or drive themselves home without complications.

Your dentist will determine when it’s appropriate for you to leave and whether you need any additional precautions. Always follow the instructions provided by your dental team.

Side Effects May Include…

Nitrous oxide is generally considered safe when administered appropriately by trained dental professionals. However, side effects can occur.

Some patients experience nausea, dizziness, headaches, sweating, or an uncomfortable feeling during treatment. These effects are often temporary, and your dentist can adjust the gas level or discontinue its use if necessary.

Before your appointment, tell your dentist about your medical conditions, medications, pregnancy status, and any previous reactions to sedation. Certain medical conditions may make nitrous oxide unsuitable, so an individualized assessment is important.

If anxiety is keeping you from the dentist’s chair, it doesn’t have to! Nitrous oxide is a safe, efficient relaxant that can help you get the care you deserve!
