A scaling and root planing treatment allows us to attack periodontal disease right at the source. For this, your hygienist will first use an ultrasonic cleaner to break up and clear away any plaque or tartar deposits located around your gum line, and then the roots of your teeth will be gently reshaped to make them less likely to trap plaque in the future, significantly lowering your chances of redeveloping gum disease.
Antibiotic Therapy
After a scaling and root planing treatment, our team may choose to apply a topical antibiotic, Arestin, to your gums to further fight the infection. This is a powdery substance that is actually made of thousands of tiny microspheres filled with a powerful antimicrobial agent. When applied to the gums, it will harden into a wax-like texture and slowly dissolve over the next seven days, allowing the medicine to reach even the most deeply hidden bacteria.
